Facial recognition can raise questions. How exactly does it work? What happens to your data? And is it secure? At Secure Logistics, we prefer to call facial recognition facial verification. In this overview, we explain how it works and most importantly: how your privacy is well protected.

What do we mean by facial recognition?

What is often referred to as 'facial recognition' is in fact facial verification at Secure Logistics. This means your face is compared one-to-one with a biometric profile that is securely encrypted and stored on your access card, such as the CargoCard.

There is no central database, and therefore no large-scale storage of facial images. The comparison only happens when you present your card to a Secure Logistics access control system.

Is my face securely stored on my access card?

Yes, absolutely! If you choose to add facial recognition to your CargoCard, this is done at one of our designated activation locations, such as the Secure Logistics Service Point at Maasvlakte Plaza. A one-time photo is taken of your face and encrypted directly onto the chip of your card using advanced encryption.

The photo is then immediately deleted from the activation location's computer. Nothing is stored. Only you carry the code on your card. The card is used solely for access and can only be read by Secure Logistics equipment.

How does facial recognition work at the access gate?

No identification, only verification

Your biometrics are never used to determine “Who are you?” The system only checks: “Does this face match the card that was offered?” This means you remain in control of when and how your face is used and only you can gain access with your card.

The access process

The process using facial recognition is both reliable and efficient:

  1. You present your access pass (e.g., CargoCard) at the card reader of a Secure Logistics access control system.
  2. The card reader scans your card and starts the facial verification.
  3. A light turns on: the camera captures a live image of your face. No recordings are made without your knowledge.
  4. The system compares this image with the encrypted profile on your card.
  5. Is there a match? Access is granted. No match? The gate remains closed.

What happens to my data?

We ensure your biometric data is maximally protected:

Full control
Your biometric data is only used when you present your card. You remain in full control.

Stored only on the card
Your biometric data is stored only on your card, nowhere else. Not even at terminals or activation locations.

Secure deletion
When the card is destroyed, the biometric data is permanently and securely removed.
