Hutchison Ports ECT Rotterdam will switch to facial recognition this year as the new biometric access control method for truck drivers. This step is part of a broader upgrade of the security infrastructure at the ECT terminals, aimed at providing even safer access and improving traffic flow.

From finger vein to facial recognition

The current finger vein technology will gradually be replaced by facial recognition. This form of access verification is fully contactless, faster, and ensures a reliable and smooth flow at the terminals. Moreover, facial recognition is completely secure and privacy-proof.

At Secure Logistics, we work with Facial Recognition on Chip. This means that your biometrics are encrypted and stored on the chip of your own access pass, and not in a central database. This way, you always keep control of your data and your privacy remains optimally protected. When accessing the terminal, the face is compared one-on-one with the biometric profile on the pass. There is therefore no central database and therefore no large-scale storage of faces. The comparison only takes place when you present your pass yourself.

What does this transition mean for you as a CargoCard user?

The rollout will start at the end of May / beginning of June at the ECT Euromax terminal, where the first security lane will be equipped with facial recognition. The other lanes at Euromax will follow, followed by the ECT Delta terminal.
To retain access to the terminals after this rollout, your CargoCard must be equipped with facial recognition. Without it, access to the terminals will eventually no longer be possible.

Does your CargoCard not yet have facial recognition?

Then have it added for free at our Service Point Maasvlakte Plaza (Hormuzstraat 50, 3199 KW Rotterdam).

Does your CargoCard already have facial recognition?

Then you don't have to do anything!

FAQ

Want to make sure facial recognition is activated on your CargoCard, Digital Safety Passport or PortKey? Just follow these steps:

  1. Log in to XS-ID Online using your personal XS-ID.
  2. Click on your XS-ID and then go to User details.
  3. Scroll down to the section XS-Keys and biometrics.
  4. Do you see a green checkmark next to Facial recognition? Then it’s all set up. No checkmark? Then facial recognition is not yet active. This applies to other biometric features as well.

Yes, the use of facial recognition is completely safe and privacy-proof. If you have facial recognition added to your CargoCard, this is done at one of the affiliated activation locations, including the Secure Logistics Service Point Maasvlakte Plaza. A one-time photo of your face is taken there and encrypted using advanced encryption and stored on the chip of your access pass. The photo is then immediately deleted from the computer at the activation location. So nothing is saved. Only you have the code with you, on your pass. The pass is used exclusively for access and can only be read by Secure Logistics equipment.

In addition, we ensure that your biometric data is maximally protected.

Full control: Your biometric data is only used when you present your pass. As a user, you therefore have full control over this.

No storage location outside the pass: The biometric data is only on your access pass, nowhere else. This means that it is not stored at an acceptance location, such as a terminal.

Securely deleted after destruction: Once the access card is destroyed, the biometric data is also deleted and can no longer be accessed.

What is often called ‘facial recognition’ is in fact facial verification with us. This means that your face is compared one-on-one with a biometric profile that is encrypted and stored on your access pass, such as the CargoCard. There is therefore no central database and therefore no large-scale storage of faces. The comparison only takes place when you present your pass yourself.
