Here you will find frequently asked questions about biometrics: facial recognition and fingerprint biometrics.
You can have all forms of biometrics added to the access pass free of charge at our Maasvlakte Plaza service point. For all our activation points, please go to our locations. You can then filter by the desired biometrics form.
Please note! Not all biometrics forms are available at every activation location.
- The registered biometric information is stored on the personal access card that the visitor carries. The access card contains a chip that stores this data securely.
- At the gate there is a card reader and facial recognition camera, fingervein unit or fingerprint recognition unit. When the visitor wants to gain access, the visitor places the access pass in the card reader.
- After the pass has been read, the visitor is asked to provide biometrics.
- The biometrics unit compares the data with the data stored on the card.
- Do the data match? The data is then sent to the access control system. Then the barrier goes up!
Yes, the use of facial recognition is completely safe and privacy-proof.
When you choose to add facial recognition to your CargoCard, this is done at one of the affiliated activation locations, including the Secure Logistics Service Point at Maasvlakte Plaza. A one-time photo of your face is taken there and securely encrypted onto the chip of your access pass. The photo is immediately deleted from the computer at the activation location. Nothing is stored anywhere else. Only you carry the code on your pass. The pass is used exclusively for access purposes and can only be read by Secure Logistics equipment.
We ensure that your biometric data is fully protected at all times.
Full control: Your biometric data is only used when you present your pass. You stay fully in control.
No external storage: The biometric data is stored solely on your access pass and nowhere else. It is not saved at any acceptance location, such as a terminal.
Secure removal after destruction: When the access pass is destroyed, the biometric data is securely deleted and can no longer be accessed.
Liveness detection is a technique in which an algorithm securely determines whether the source of a biometric sample is from a living human being, and whether that person is physically present during the verification process at the gateway.
Users with damaged fingers may experience problems registering their fingerprint. This is also why two fingers are taken during the registration process. By registering two fingers, we increase the chances of successful verification even if one of the fingers is damaged.
We recommend an acceptance site with biometrics to offer alternative verification methods for card users with damaged fingers, such as employing an employee for manual verification in such cases.
Two fingerprints are made as an additional security measure to increase the authentication process and to ensure that the user always has access even if one of the fingerprints is not read properly.
The fingerprints are made of the middle finger and the index finger of the left hand. When the truck driver is in the cabin, the left hand is closer to the access column. This makes scanning the fingerprints even more efficient for the user. However, if there is a preference for two other fingers, this is also possible.
Want to make sure facial recognition is activated on your CargoCard, Digital Safety Passport or PortKey? Just follow these steps:
- Log in to XS-ID Online using your personal XS-ID.
- Click on your XS-ID and then go to User details.
- Scroll down to the section XS-Keys and biometrics.
- Do you see a green checkmark next to Facial recognition? Then it’s all set up. No checkmark? Then facial recognition is not yet active. This applies to other biometric features as well.
What is often called ‘facial recognition’ is in fact facial verification with us. This means that your face is compared one-on-one with a biometric profile that is encrypted and stored on your access pass, such as the CargoCard. There is therefore no central database and therefore no large-scale storage of faces. The comparison only takes place when you present your pass yourself.
